Shannon VanRaes is a Winnipeg-based journalist, photojournalist and editor whose work has appeared in publications such as Maclean's Magazine, The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post, Toronto Star, The Independent, The Guardian and The National Post, as well as the Manitoba Co-operator, Country-Guide and the Western Producer.
She is a long-standing contract photographer with Reuters Pictures and Bloomberg Images, as well as a past contributor to the Winnipeg Free Press, Metro Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Sun.
Shannon’s journalistic practice is frequently driven by current events, but the intersection of industry and society, particularly agribusiness and social license, often informs her discretionary work, no doubt the result of growing up living and working on tobacco farms in Southern Ontario before attending the University of Toronto.
In 2014, she was recognized as the Glenn Cunningham Agriculture Journalist of the Year by the North American Agricultural Journalists for an eight-month investigation into a failed hemp processing plant.
In recent years, Shannon has focused on combining documentary photography with long-form writing projects. She is available for assignments globally.
